The Catholic Spirit received 140 entries for a youth essay contest that asked the question: Why do you want to go fishing in Minnesota? Here is the winner, Madeline Weathers, who was a 3rd grader at the time from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School, in Hastings.
My name is Maddie, I am 8 years old. I would really love to go fishing in Minnesota this summer and I would love to take my dad. My dad is very special to me, he always takes time to do fun things with me.
This winter my dad took my sister and me to fly tying classes. We were the only kids and the ONLY girls! We learned how to tie wooly buggers, spiders and lots more! I met a lot of really nice and friendly people.
I want to take my dad fishing and show him how I can catch walleyes with a the new stuff we learned how to make. My dad is a very good fisherman and he loves to fish, almost as much as me. I would take my dad because he is so special to take time to help me with stuff and he has always been there for me whenever I need him, ever since I was a baby. He is the best dad someone could have. We would have lots of fun and take lots of pictures. And I promise to catch and release, too!
